Hey Charlie,
That was a very predictable observation. Besides amplifying and projecting sound outward, a bell has to radiate back to the player. With no feedback, we can't control the horn. Where a bell is dampened (braced ifyou will) has an effect on it's resonance outward and back to the player. Attention to neglected little details can make any horn better.
