Hey Larry, you can save a lot of money if you go with an "econo-overhaul". $1000 is a lot of money to make an old sentimental horn look like new, and the lacquer may never be as you remember it. Check out some of the sousaphones up for auction by Harv's Happy Horns, and if they look good enough to you give him a call and see if he has time for your horn. It won't be a complete restoration, but it'll look good from ten feet away, and you'll be able to haul it out once in a while for a parade or tuba Christmas. I had some big dents banged out of my old Conn, and all four slides pulled, for just a couple hundred bucks. Sure, there are a few scratches, rub marks, and a little bit of solder at a joint or two, but I knew what I was getting and am very pleased to have that horn back in action for a reasonable price.
just my $.02
