Tubalew is correct. A full-blown job is easily $2000, if you can find someone who is willing to work you in, rather that to continue to process their own instruments for sale.

The gold color is from the orange (gold) tint in the lacquer, just like Vito (Yamaha-made) saxophones, etc. The darker color NOW is from the brass UNDERNEATH the lacquer managing to tarnish a bit over the years, and aging/yellowing of the lacquer itself. These days, King has pretty much given up on tradition, and is offering clear lacquer. I do believe that they still offer tinted lacquer as an option, though. You should be able to get it bright silver plated at the time of restoration (if desired) for an additional $500 or so.

Sentiment is worth a lot, and I respect it. Economics might point towards one of those ebay restored horns for $2000 and selling your BACK on ebay for $400.
