I used to think that composers compose really metrically sideways pieces only in order to "show off", but lately I have played some really GOOD pieces with a lot of wild shifts. Once me (or the entire group) got into the "swing" of these pieces, it became obvious that they were not written that way "just" to be wierd or to show off.

I have enjoyed some cable/public T.V. JAZZ concerts involving wild combinations such as strange combinations of African instruments and synthesizers (this would be a description of a single "hybrid" instrument) combined with banjo (of all things) and other non-traditional instrument combinations - pieces often in very irregular meters, and with a LOT of beat and a lot of soul.

I would risk the statement, however, that there ARE quite a few odd meter pieces that are written as attempts to impress or to attract attention...pieces of little substance.
