I am by no means an expert in the sound of tubas, but several months ago I had the fortune to stop into Dillon's Music. Matt had a MW18 which he was impressed with. It is smaller than the MW25, but was not that different in sound. I think it goes for around $3500, so it does not fit your under $3K.

From the research I have been doing the past few months I would agree with the replies that stated Cerveny 686, VMI 2103 and the Jupiter or a used Miraphone 186. Note that Cerveny makes a 681, which is similar than the 686, but has a smaller bell. If you want the more darker sound, pay the few hundred more and get the 686. Dillon's had a signature horns that was actually the Cerveny 686 in the rose brass with minibal valves. It was really nice, but the price was closer to $3500.

The Jupiter deal is hard to beat for the money

Just wished I had the money to make a decision.
