the 191 has a better volume range because of the bore. I have been playing a 5 vlv 191 for a year now and it has the ability to play softer than i have ever before and i cant make it blast.
to me it is a no brainer. the 191 has better volume control, color of ssound, projection and easier to play. The only thing the 186 has on it is slightly better intonation.that is all. the 191 has a better upper and lower register but with slight intonation problems but once u get used to the tuba intonation is not an issue. Its kind of what alot of guys have told me how it feels to play an Alexander on intonation.
i love my 191 5 vlv gold brass and would not trade it for the world. i love playing it more and more everytime i play it and i never tire of playing it at all.
my 2 cents

a happy tuba player that has fun making music and doesn't care about the rest.
