I also played "oom-pah" gigs this weekend. I used a DEG stand on a big MW BBb tuba, and had no troubles with it at all. It's very light and portable, but I do think that the saddle portion could be just a bit bigger. The band I played in had the bell clip-on mikes that you were talking about - the ones with a little electronic condensor or pre-amp (or something). As not much of the tuba sound was coming through the monitor speakers, it's difficult to say just how effective it was, but there was a sound guy who kept adjusting everything through the day.

The tuba stand did come in handy because the chairs were just the usual forward sloping, plastic folding ones that you see everywhere. No matter how you slice it, Oktoberfest gigs can be exhausting.
