Don't mess with a good thing! If it plays well without the 5th valve, I wouldn't take any chances. You've most likely got a rare and valuable instrument there, no sense messing it up if oyu don't need to.
As for 1928 Conns, my 1928 Conn Sousie also has the bottom MOP discs. Really neat! I thought it may have been a special "50th Anniversary" edition, as Conn incorporated in 1878. That may not be the case, but it sure is cool anyway.
Can you post a picture when you've got it cleaned up nicely?
