There was a discussion on alternatives, including nickel and rhodium for plating some months back. At the time, Doug Elliot opined that the problem with putting a really hard coating over a soft metal like brass was that the plating was likely to delaminate if the mouthpiece was struck on anything.

I'm STILL waiting for one of the experts to tell me why PVD Titanium Nitride wouldn't make the best coating of all. If it works for plumbing fixtures and surgical tools, then why not mouthpieces? It looks like gold (you can also get PVD coatings in several colors), is harder than carborundum and is only microns thick. Willson coats their trombone slides with it.
