Compromises between CC and Eb tubas could look hard to get at, as long as tubas in Db or D natural are not sold in quantities at every street corner.

Compromise must be sought in the smaller end of the CC palette or in the larger end of the Eb ditto.

The Besson 983 with all its highly respectable qualities is not a CC substitute. It is pointing in the F direction.

If you are out for an Eb pointing towards a CC function, and if you are a Besson fan, then the answer is the 981.

But beware: the 981 most definitely is not a CONTRABASS tuba.

I love my 981, but despite that love I had to have a BBb (really 2 BBb’s) to do what I wanted in the lover register.
