Don't confuse joy with beatific facial expressions. Joy in performance is expressed as a commitment to the music, a desire to sell it to the audience. Therefore it is a decision.

Think of a lawyer in oral argument. The lawyer is an advocate for a position about which he may not be personally involved. But he must sound like he is a passionate believer in that cause to persuade a jury. To sound that way convincingly, he must *decide* to be a passionate believer--at least for the duration of his speech. It is the same decision Robert Redford makes to persuade us that he is Jeremiah Johnson.

Anyone who is committed to the music will not look bored and uninspired, because they won't be.
