Michael Sanders won his St. Louis audition with a Yorkbrunner of about the same vintage as yours. I played one about that time, too, and still remember how easy it was to make a sweet (for me) sound on that instrument.

But, with all due respect to Mike, when I heard him play in a quintet with the Yorkbrunner (it was the only CC tuba he owned at the time), it seemed a little too big for the group. It goes without saying that it was no lack of skill on his part, but the sound of that instrument seemed to me just a bit too compelling for a small chamber group.

I wonder if the agility on the player's side of the instrument is matched by the agility of the sound out front?

Of course, Jacobs played big horns routinely in his brass quintet, to no ill effect.
