We are actually borrowing the Philadelphia Orchestra's cimbasso. It's a meinl Weston, pitched in F with 5 valves and a 6th kicker on the 2nd slide. Since I had never played cimbasso, or trombone for that matter, it has been a totally new experience. I'm really enjoying it, and almost don't want to give it back. It uses much more air than my 5/4 rudy CC, and taks a little to get a realy nice sound. When Blair bolliger played it, he had absolutey no trouble making it sound beautiful. My thought is that it must be played more like a trombone than a tuba. One must be careful, because it is extremely easy to play louder than you might expect. Since the bell is far away from your head, it's tricky to tell exactly how loud you are playing it. All and all.. A real good experience.
