All of the F Schmidt(www.tubastore.com) and VMI (www.wwnadbw.com) tubas are great, both are made by VMI. The Brasswind does not have the 101(miraphone 186 style
The 101 is a Miraphone 186style tuba with the older 16 1/2 in bell and plays like one.
the 103, 3103 or 2103 is more like a PT1 with a 17 3/4 in bell and standard linkage
the 3301 is a large valve piston set like on all of the B&S CC tubas but is a compact piston with a 19 inch bell
All 3 of these tubas are great and are worth consideration. They are made well and play well and would be a great addition to making him a great player for the future.
