just as you can *open up* the sound of a m.p. a bit by having the throat of it drilled a bit more open, you can impove intonation slightly by having the backbore opened up a bit more instead (or in addition). However, in my experience, that also *brightens* the sound slightly as well. All of these things end up being something of a tradeoff. However, a good place to start is to make certain your m.p. is basically fitting correctly. Again, there shouldn't be a big gap between the end of the shank, and the start of the leadpipe inside the receiver. The closer you can make those two things butt up to each other, the better. However, I don't want to exaggerate just how much of a change these kinds of alterations can or will make. I'd love to at least try a Monette m.p., but I don't want to pay that kind of money either. I need to concentrate on aquiring a horn or two first.
