I'm not saying that they weren't loud (I'm no slouch myself), but that there are certain notes that were not naturally balanced in any way, and it all happened in the mixing room -- no other explanation.

And, it has been said that they preferred using smaller horns for recording for a tighter, cleaner sound, along with their own mic in the blast zone of the bell. The idea is that the mixing can be done later to achieve a specific sound and balance. That recording, to me, was just too sloppy in its execution. I'd much rather hear that session through a single pair of mics about 15-20 feet behind the conductor (which is how the BBC recording sounds).
