I had a gig bag once. Used it for 2 tubas. Both ended up dented anyway. A gig bag's padding really doesn't fully protect a tuba. True, they are convienent to carry, but I've found a hard case with wheels added not only protects the instrument, but enables me to handle rough parking lots, curbs, even stairways. I designed and added my own wheels by bolting a steel frame to the case and attaching 10" wheels to that frame. Every case is shaped a bit differently, so you have to design a frame that will work on your specific case. I'd be glad to share details, e-mail me if you're interested.
