If they are really a buddy and the performance was really bad, try to say *something* nice to them. Personally, I don't even notice the congrats, because I'm usually glad the performance is over. If they know they didn't do well (which is sometimes 95% of the case), just be their friend.

The BEST time to experiment with playing and performing is in college. People will still come. You have to do it, you won't get fired from the university. You may feel stupid, but if your friends come and they have plenty of beer afterward (along with you--being the performer), they aren't gonna care about the recital anyway. If they solicit congrats, think up something like js said. You can always tell them they looked nice. If they really performed poorly, like I said, they already know it.

I can tell you, you can definately say "I learned something from you tonight, thank you" and that is to PRACTICE REALLY HARD!!!
