Well...I can say that I myself will not say anything at all if I am not approached by the person after a sub par performance. But that would be judged on a per situation basis. If I have a beginning student barely make it through a major scale for the first time I give them large amounts of praise but the same is not true for an advanced student. Plus I usually do not offer my praise the evening of the event if I enjoyed it. I wait until the next day or the next chance I see the person/people to offer my appreciation of their performance. I have always felt that many people will applaud you the night of the concert even if you did well or not, but the compliment that comes the day after or a week later was truley an earned and honest compliment.
