OK, not entirely tuba related, but you are the sort of people that I should be asking this question to, so I will:
I am a first year teacher, and we just started beginning band. Surprisingly, I have an easier time teaching beginning woodwinds than the beginning brass. All my students can buzz and play a note, but when it comes to sustaining a specific pitch I have trouble explaining myself. Most of the ones with trouble start out on the right pitch but can't sustain. I have tried telling them to blow a leaf across the room, blow across a long table, etc..., but it doesn't seem to work. I also have one student who instead of playing a first line E plays an A or higher, and I can't get him play lower. Please help me, as I feel like the village idiot! After all, I PLAY a brass instrument, shouldn't I be able to teach it?
Any help would be appreciated.
