The answer is nothing or plenty. If you maintain the taper ratio between two horns and everything else works out the same, then it doesn't matter. However that is usually not the case. The location of the valve section becomes a fixed point and the beginning diameter of the receiver may become a fixed point. Quite often however, people put the largest leadpipe on the horn to get a "free blowing" feel. The larger the leadpipe is behind the reciever, the less chance you have to taper it up to the diameter going into the valve section. Quicker taper gives you a faster attack requiring less articulation on the horn. So if you want to use a large (little taper) leadpipe to blow more open, and the beginning diameter of the valve section is a fixed point, then a shorter leadpipe will give you a quicker articulation. Add the length back in somewhere else.
Hope that helps. As always, the inconsistencies between humans has the ability to offset the best theories and confound any instrument builder. Matt
