Currently, I'm a borderline fat slob. I messed up a knee (typical excuse) a few years ago and after my knee healed (no excuse) I didn't resume running.
When I did run every day (night actually), I would only run about three miles. This was no "he-man" amount of running, but was quite beneficial and kept me in very good cardiovascular condition (blood pressure 98/60 , resting pulse 55) during that time. Yep, the shallow breathing thing can carry over into running - even though one would think that you would need as much air as possible, actually you don't.
However, when I was running and did form deep breathing habits, the running was easier and more fun (just like tuba playing is with deep breathing. I did have to forn the habit, though.
