Andy,
I have had some experience with the UMI case, and I don't think they are very durable. what's more, the protective foam tends to come loose and fall out of the case. I've seen problems with the Walt Johnson cases, too, and there is a report elsewhere here about SKB problems. Badger State Repair & Case Co., in Elkhorn, WI, sells what they call the "Big Brute" sousaphone case, which is a sturdy wood-shell, super-reinforced case which has extra wood on the bottom, to which heavy-duty industrial casters are mounted, four of them. I don't think these cases are terribly expensive, and if this won't protect your sousa (and your back), nothing will.
