The muscle that's being exercised is the diaphram. Getting it to stretch more and become more plastic allows me to take a larger breath. I have had good control without the exercises, I just noticed that I was able to take in more air and control its' use more effectively.

Using the Power Lung will never take the place of practicing, but it can certainly help in the warm-up phase. It is very similar to the stretching one does of muscles prior to running, swimming, bicycling, and other sports activities. Our primary use muscles are in the face and the diaphram. It made sense to try something that just might work. I find it useful for that purpose. If it results in my being able to take a deeper breath then I get something for nothing.
