I agree completely with your comments about distance running, swimming, and air for the tuba. I never filled my lungs fully when running (even in a marathon) except when sprinting. If anything, the better in shape I was the more efficiently I could run without breathing too hard. I've also noticed that swimming is a lot like breathing for the tuba, especially when breathing on alternative sides or every other stroke, each of which requires a big inhalation and slow out blow, just like playing. Last summer I showed my daughter (a swim coach in a summer league) the breathing bag I use (from Brian Fredrickson as advocated by AJ) and she thought it might help swimmers who hadn't learned how to really fill up their lungs. If they had'nt so expensive she might have bourght one for use with her team.
