Hi,

I'm not great with specifics, but basically, as you play your horn over time, bacteria, calcium, and other junk builds up inside (especially if you eat or drink anything before playing - except water). It sticks to the insides of the tube, causing greater obstruction... think of someone in bad need of a coronary bypass. You get your horn chemically cleaned, or acid washed, in order to clear that stuff out. A lot of people take it to a good repairman, who has to remove all the slides and valves, dump it in a vat of chemicals, then flush it out. This may take several hours or several days, and prices can range from $75 to $200, depending on who you're working with. It makes a big difference when you get it back, since none of that junk is in there anymore. Ideally, you might try to do it every six months. Careful who you go to - I heard of a place that soaks the horn in dishwashing liquid, called it an acid bath, and charged $200.

Thanks,
Aubrey
