A good home mixture for removing oxidation from brass is a paste made from vinegar, salt, and a little flour to hold it together. Just rub the paste on raw brass (don't use on lacquer of course), let sit for a few minutes and rub off or rinse off with water. Don't rub too hard because this is abrasive, but it does a nice job of removing oxidation from brass. Once you've removed all of the residue the brass can be polished with a soft cloth.
