Rick, do small horns generally have poor preferred tones? I have a rather small (and very battered) old 3-valve Eb tuba that plays in tune chromatically down to its pedal Eb. As I play down below the 2nd partial Eb, the tone gets increasingly thin and rattling -- hardly anything one would use to support a big ensemble. However, the break between the "regular" notes and the preferred tones (starting at low Ab) is not audible. Of course, the pitch centers of the preferred tones are rather wide. It's too bad this horn is too battered for real use, and not cost effective to fix.

I was wondering if one of those readily available and cheap used 3-valve small Eb horns would be good for mainly higher playing, where the 4th and 5th valves aren't needed. Or, would one still want to cover a wide range, invcluding low, necessitating the additional valves?
