I have noticed in the last few years most new tubas are getting closer to having little or no step between the receiver and the leadpipe. Some still have a "gap" where the leadpipe is smaller than the end of the receiver, ans a few have what I call a "reverse gap" where the end of the receiver is smaller than the beginning of the leadpipe. Of course it makes a difference, positive or negative, but as David said, what's important is whether you like it. My personal opinion is that no step either direction is best. All of the better instruments seem to be made with less steps in the interior.
