Stainless steel is also much stronger than brass, so a steel tuba could be made of thinner metal too. I think it could be much lighter than a brass instrument. The tendency to ring like a bell on certain notes would require some engineering, but could be worked out. Steel is not as easy to shape as brass, but it can be done. Soldering is the real problem. But I just read about a new type of epoxy that can be heat-softened, just like solder. They claim that a joint can be separated and re-joined successfully six or eight times with the same epoxy. I think it's worth looking into.
