I've always had teachers who stressed the importance of an education degree. While I agree with that, I don't believe a person should go into teaching if their heart isn't in it. If you want to play, I believe a person should do their best to play in every style possible from jazz, polkas, orchestral, band, quintets, etc while working toward their degree. You never know what will pay the bills. A reason there are a lot of successful euphonium players is that they go out and create playing opportunities for themselves. Sure, it's not always(if ever) orchestral or band gigs, but steady work, and that is what all of us should do. There should definitely be some type of music business classes that go into every music degree. No one will promote our instruments but us! My .02
