I think you have arrived at the same conclusion I have after having worked on a number of instruments that improved beyond my expectations. Inherently bad instrument designs are not nearly as common as manufacturing mistakes. Just about any flaw you can imagine in the manufacturing process has happened at least a few times. My favorite was when someone brought me a new instrument, and complained that they couldn't seem to get all the water out of it. I discovered that, although the water key was installed, no one had drilled a hole in the tubing (!!!)
