Conductors at some of the major symphonies earn in the seven figures, so I guess $200K is not too far above the norm for a medium size city. Most conductors, as with most musicians are paid what the market is willing to pay them.

Some conductors draw audiences (i.e. sell tickets). Conductors schmooze with the fat cats and get big donations for the orchestra.
