Dr. Benedict Kirby is an awesome player and his teaching style is a model by which all professors should aspire to develop. I can't say enough good things about the man. The school of music is very high quality in every departement. UNC is very competitive ( the Orchestra has won the down beat award for best orchestra for the past couple years) Because the education program here is top notch there is a huge puul for music students to come to UNC. Consequently the concert ensembles and chamber ensemble are freaking incredible. Also the Jazz program is great also. IF you want an affordable place to attend college with cool people, great tuba players, great ensembles, a chance to play in a quintet tuba quartet, (or any other chamber ensemble you can dream up) great faculty, relatively low tuition costs---- go to UNC.
If nothing else come out and meet/take a lesson with Dr. Kirby. He knows his stuff and he loves sharing his knowledge with people in a way that anyone can learn from!
I'm not a sales man- just an undergraduate who will graduate in May and is very happy with the progress and experience he has gained over the past five years at UNC
