It's real simple. Almost every dixie piece I have ever played has been in Bb, Eb, or Ab. For improvising a bass line or a solo, which horn would you rather use in the key of Ab? a CC tuba, or an Eb? Of course a CC can play the same notes, but you are just creating work for yourself. For me, CC tuba is a key signature neutral horn. It works well in both the flat, mostly band keys, and the sharp, mostly orchestra keys. If I was playing only band music, I would probably not own a CC tuba, more likely an EEb or maybe a BBb. If you can imnprovise in the key of E as well you can in the Key of Eb, your brain must just be wired a little better than mine. Congratulations.

Mark
