When I was first experimenting with vibrato, I got all caught up in the "scientific" approach, what with figuring in how many vibrations per second and how many vibrations per note and whatnot, and it got me absolutely nowhere. Then, a very fine teacher told me just to DO it and not worry about what I am doing, just as long as I did it in good taste. I stopped overanalyzing and it worked like a charm. Another interesting observation, given to me by Dr. John Richards is to vary the speed of the vibrato according to the register in which you are playing. He used the example of a tuba or string bass compared to a violin, the violin vibrato is much faster because, generally speaking, the register being played in is much higher. I've tried this and it really has does work, at least for me.
