This seems almost too big a thing to get my arms around, and perhaps someone looking in from the outside could see the effects more clearly than those of us who grew up in it.
My reason for responding, however, is that the Cleveland recording of the Holst First Suite is not likely to represent any connection that might exist between marching and symphonic bands. Those musicians were classically trained from the outset, and mostly working symphony pros. And Fennell was not, as I recall, a marching band director.
I'm sure there is a connection, but I don't think this recording would reveal it.
