We just have to go out there and promote our instrument through excellent playing, creative use of the instrument when possible, and good musical citizenship.
I was supposed to play string bass for a musical this summer, and in a shop accident just prior to the day of the performance, I managed to slice open a finger on my left hand. The cut was serious enough that I was not going to be playing bass anywhere for a couple of weeks. I practiced the parts on tuba and took it to the gig. The director was surprised, but it became a pleasant surprise to him as the show got under way. We received more compliments that night than we had in the last two years. It may have been the first time to use a tuba for that group, but it won't be the last.
