Caveat:
I am an expert -- Translation --

spurt = drip under pressure

Given that, and a totally amateur status, I have observed that British Brass Bands (at least on the recordings I have heard) make use of much wider dynamic ranges than do US wind ensembles. At least the ones I have heard. This to the point that I am aurally put off by some BBB recordings because I can't find a volume setting that lets me hear the pianissimos without being deafened by the fortissimos.
