Of course, I have to ask this: Why in the world would a marching band whose goal is to entertain the crowds during the half-time break attempt an homage to WWII, however historically accurate? Isn't that choice of subject a bit over-wrought to accompany hot dogs and peanuts and trips to the restroom?

Part of the silliness of the age is that we treat history so superficially, especially events in history that are beyond the study and comprehension of probably the band director, let alone the students. They could have had a "flags across the world" theme and played exactly the same music with the same flags (except for one, of course) and had no problem, because their upbeat message would have fit the upbeat atmosphere. Memorializing a war seems to require solemnity not available during a football game, and presenting a subject that should be this solemn smacks of immature attempts at being "meaningful."

Perhaps the audience was throwing their cokes onto the field because they were expecting to be entertained by trained entertainers rather than educated by untrained historians.
