I got an ErgoBone at Helsinki. It should work perfectly for him. It's actually possible to play without holding the instrument at all. It has a harness similar to a sax harness that some sax players use instead of a neckstrap. Also, it can be modified to have different straps it needs to be more secure. Email me if you have any questions - there are several easy modifications I'm thinking about. I could send it to you to try if you want, or just order one. The guy who makes them is really trying to provide a service to trombonists to both avoid shoulder problems and help if you already have problems.
