Just practice really hard and get everything technically perfect and not miss a note and play little to no dynamics then you'll be first chair. Thats the way it works. Or you could get away from the "Texas Band" stereotype and practice just as hard and get everything technically perfect and blow them away with your musicality, that will turn some heads. "play outside the box"
