What the first two guys said....and, it is the same tube length as a French horn. It plays lower because the mouthpiece and tubing are a lot bigger. And in case the meat & potatoes range wasn't clear....from F just below the bass clef to the F two leger lines above the bass clef is it. A good F tuba player can easily play clearly an octave below this, but you should avoid fast technical passages in that octave unless your objective is to torture the player.
