Not exactly as automatic as you imply. In fact not as easy as a BMW or the like. However I think the analogy "CMC" applies to the tubas as being the "Rolls Royce" of the tuba works out well. Extremely overpriced, not any better functionally than the same product produced by someone else, and enforces a sense of elitism.

Mind you, I don't doubt the overall quality of the brand or its effectiveness, but one can find a functionally equivalent item for far less.

Moral:

Play a lot of horns. Figure out which one meets all of your needs (playing flexibility, ergonomics, fiscal constraints, etc.) the best at that time. That will be the perfect horn for YOU at that time.

Go to a tuba Mecca, i.e. Dillon's WW&BW, Baltimore Brass, ect.

Most important: Don't worry about the brand on the horn if the horn seems to work for you. A good musician only cares about what is coming out of it, not what is stamped on it...
