Doug, it was a very good show. To tell you the truth, it was pretty obvious this was the semester's first concert: the kids were a little shaky at times, especially in the beginning number.

The guest artist, clarinetist Ted Gurch of the ASO, was simply magical. His playing was especially stunning on "Black Dog," but both pieces he played were terrific and flawless to my tin ear.

There were a few changes to the advertised music. Rudin's Bacchanale was scratched and the world premiere of "As the scent of spring rain . . ." by Jonathan Newman was added in its place. Bernstein's rousing "Slava!" was added as a finale.

These Emory Wind Ensemble concerts are one of the best-kept music secrets in Atlanta. Yes, it is a student ensemble but the combination of top-tier guest artists, repetoire that can't be heard anywhere else, and arguably one of the best concert venues in the state (certainly one of the newest) makes these concerts the best free show in town IMO.
