Oh, don't misunderstand. I played bass trombone in jazz band in junior high school, and I know what the slide positions mean. But knowing what they mean in the Engineer Brain and knowing how to move the hand are two different things.
Right now, I'm thinking, okay, this is how to finger a euphonium, and those valves correspond to this position, and then move my hand there, only to discover that my hand thinks the position is an inch beyond where it really needs to be, and so on. It will take a bit of time to get past all this thinking so that the black spot on the page means a certain precise motion of the hand without the intermediate steps.
