Good posting!

What the Spanish orchestra does only is, that it follows EU rules for foreign workers. These rules count for every trade, not only for musicians.

The same rules are announced in all audition advertising from all of the EU.

In my country musicians signing up for an audition have to pay a deposit to be registered. The deposit will only be refunded, if the applicant shows up at the audition.

Until this rule was enforced committees wasted great amounts of time, because a great percentage of the applicants never showed up.

European orchestras are not really xenophobic. During my years of following Danish orchestras we have had one US born solo clarinettist (who has been the chairman or his fellow musicians in our Royal Chapel), and 3 US born solo horns in 3 other orchestras.

Scandinavia is one single work market for the citizens of the 3 countries, even if one of them (Norwegia) is not a member of the EU.

Michael Lind is a Dane, but has had most, if not all, of his career in Sweden. We have several prominent Swedish and Norwegian players here.

Even one of our military band for a period had a Norwegian director.

K
