I think the NSO (unless other orchestras devised this procedure prior to them) came up with a plan that would:

- parade weaker-resumed applicants through very quickly
- give the orchestra a good selection of experienced/known candidates
- place those experienced/known candidates in the audition line-up in a place that the committee would not inadvertently overlook them (the semi-finals)
- give the orchestra a WINNER after ONE weekend ordeal of auditions, rather than two or three cattle-calls

Again, if the NSO really wanted to "let the cards fall where they may", placing the specially-invited experienced players in the semi-finals (for easier identification by the committee) would not have been a priority. If an inexperienced player had prevailed at the NSO auditions, they still had the final option of choosing "no winner".
