Maybe its the same as the reason why orchestra trumpeters prefer C trumpet: The sound is smaller, but it isnt as disgustingly blatty when you really step on the gas, so its effectively a more powerful horn if you want a pretty sound. If I tried to use my BBb tuba in a symphony at those volume levels the result would not be pretty. Actually a guy did use my tuba in the boston symphony for one piece just for its blatty BBb tuba sound.
