It is a rich mix of upper harmonics that gives a sound core and character. The fundamental is actually rather weak by itself, and has not much carrying power. The smaller mouthpieces keep the big horns from producing too much fundamental in their sound, and thus they keep them from getting woofy.

But it isn't just size. I play a PT-48 on the Holton, and though it isn't as big as the Doug Elliott that is most effective on the York Master, it is still pretty large. But it has a bit more cup in the shape and spreads the sound over a more pleasing mix of overtones. All those overtones seem to give the sound its color and power.
